Mastering Posing Techniques for Different Body Types with the use of lighting and angels.

Posing is the art of arranging the body in a way that is flattering and visually appealing. Just because it looks good when someone else does it, does not mean that it will look good when you do it.

As a photographer for over a decade, I cannot tell you how many times someone asked me how should I pose? What I have learned is that some people can be told how to pose, some have to see how to pose, and some people need to understand what posing really is. The artwork of arranging the body in ways that are flattering for their body type is so important. The simple fact is, different body types require different poses and techniques to achieve the best results.

What are the different body types?

The hourglass Figure

The apple shape

The pear shape

The athletic build

The Hourglass Figure

Characterized by a well-defined waistline with proportional shoulders and hips. While consider posing, make the waistline the focal point.

This can be achieved by having them pose with their hips slightly tilted to one side or with their weight shifted onto one leg. This creates a natural curve curve in the waistline, enhancing the hourglass shape. Use side lighting to create shadows that accentuate the curves and make the waistline appear even smaller. Shooting from a slightly elevated angle can elongate the body, making the waistline seem more pronounced.

The Apple Shape

Characterized by a larger midsection and narrower hips and shoulders. When posing this body type the typical goal is to create the illusion of a smaller waistline.

You can achieve this with having them pose with their arms slightly away from their body, creating a small gap between the waist and the arms. Another technique is to have them cross their arms in front of the their body , which will create a slimming effect.

It is important to avoid shooting from a low angles, as this can accentuate the midsection, making it look even larger. An elevated approach will minimize the appearance of the midsection.

The Pear Shape

Characterized by wider hips and a smaller upper body. The typical goal is to create a balanced look by emphasising on the upper body.

This can be achieved by having them pose with their shoulders back and their chin slightly lifted. This will create a more open and confident look.

It is important to avoid shooting straight-on angle, as it can accentuate the width of the hips. Instead, shooting from a slightly elevated angle can create a more balanced look by emphasising the upper body.

The Athletic Build

Characterised by a muscular and toned physique. The typical goal is to showcase their strength and athleticism.

This can be achieved by simply photographing their workout. Be sure to really watch for the veins popping out to say hello, and capturing the different muscles. Keep in mind that lighting in gyms can vary, however, it is usually nice and bright.

The most important thing to remember is that you are beautiful, no matter your body type. Stay tuned for more tips for modelling and photography.
