Models and Photographers need to consider these modelling tips

As a model or photographer, you need to understand how to achieve the right poses that will highlight the models features and convey the intended mood of the shoot.

As a photographer, do you know how to communicate to the model so that they know exactly how you want them to pose?

Communication is key to any relationship, whether it be business or professional we must be able to communicate in a clear and respectful manner.

The more experienced models will have perfected most of their poses, however, there can always be a photographer out there that test the models posing skills just a little bit more, with some unique and exciting vision. It is important to have a clear set of boundaries.

THE VIBE

Creating the right kind of vibe so that the model and the photographer are both able to relax and the goal is for everyone to feel comfortable. Help the model understand the purpose and the mood of the shoot. Talk with them and try and get to know them, this will help ease their nervousness. Always be a professional and do not ask inappropriate questions.

BODY POSTURE

Ensure that the model is standing up straight, with their shoulders back, and chest out. This posture helps to create a strong, confident look in photos. I also suggest engaging the abdominal (core) muscles to help your posture as well It helps with stabilizing. Give a try right now! Take a deep breath in and then exhaling while pulling your belly button towards your spine. You have now engaged the transverse abdominis muscle.

HEAD and NECK POSTURE

This is a crucial in creating a beautiful photograph. Ensure that the model's chin is slightly lifted to avoid a double chin, and their head is slightly tilted to create a natural look.

IT'S ALL ABOUT THE EYES

Remember this saying, Eyes are the windows to the soul. Encourage your model to look directly into the camera or slightly off to create an engaging and captivating look. Make sure that you have not taken the images as the model blinks.

HANDS and ARMS

When posing for a photograph, avoid letting the arms just hang limply at the side of the body. Instead, encourage the model to put their hands on their hips, cross them in front of their body, or rest them on a nearby object.

FEET and LEGS

To create an elegant pose, have the model cross one leg over the other, or lean with the majority of your bodyweight on one foot.

MOVEMENT

It creates an element of dynamism and can make the your photos more interesting. Have the model walk or turn, throw hands into the air, just have fun and stick within the vision of the shoot. Always be patient, remember the goal is to make everyone feel comfortable.
